The September 12 meeting will be held at 7:30pm at Steve Shindell's office space, and will feature a presentation by Tom Wyatt on calcium. For those who don't know Tom, he's one of the most knowledgable resources around about all things chemical related. Many of you know him on TRT and here as tdwyatt.

There is a powerbuy on calcium reactors (http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1076) going on during September as well, to coincide with the talk.

Directions:

From I-75 South:

Take Exit #255, West Paces Ferry and Northside Parkway. Turn left off the exit ramp. You will pass under I-75. Turn right at the first light onto Northside Parkway. Go to the second light, and turn right on Howell Mill Road. Go up the hill, and turn left on the first street, Downwood Circle. Go straight on Downwood Circle into the parking deck. The building will be on your left.

From I-75 North:

Take Exit #255, West Paces Ferry and Northside Parkway. Turn right off the exit onto Northside Parkway. Take an immediate right onto Howell Mill Road. Go up the hill, and turn left on the first street, Downwood Circle. Go straight on Downwood Circle into the parking deck. The building will be on your left.

Looks to be a good talk, I am speaking with Chris (mojo) about splitting the talk into two programs: one to start with on the tank parameters, setting up calcium supplementatioin, and how the chemistry of the carbonate/bicarbonate buffer system works; and another dealing with the biochemistry of calcification/skeletogenesis and a few of the proposed mechanisms that corals utilize to build calcium skeletons (AND WHY THEY DO). It isn't mandatory that you see the first one to appreciate the second one, but it will help a lot if you don't have a good background in this area. If things go as expected, these will be the topics for the September and the October meetings, however, Chris will make the final decisiion.

Hope to see you folks there, handouts will be available and miniatures of the slides as well for notes.

Chris and I spoke last night to determine the content of the two meetings. This month we will talk about Seawater chemistry and how calcium and alkalinity may be maximized for hermatypic corals, next month we will talk about the biology of calcification in hermatypic corals specifically! You don't have to be at both meetings to appreciate each one, but it will help to understand the topic much better if you don't have a science background to attend the Sept meeting to set the groundwork for the October meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you all there to get back on track after the summer!
