I am considering incorporating the use of halide spotlights / tracklighting (similar to the japanese/hong kong inspired tanks) with my new 240 g build that is in pre-production. I am however having trouble finding spotlighting options, at least in the US for 150w halide + spot light fixtures/equipment. Anyone have any good resources?

Im not quite sure what you mean by spot lighting unless you mean just adding small ones for certain corals and that not being your main light source. I would have to recommend the Aqua Medic 150w or even their 70w option. You can find some really small reflectors at other lighting websites that could just but hung.

Well I'm thinking that I may use a 10-bulb 54W ATI PowerModul or a TEK 8-bulb fixture coupled with spot light/tracklight halides that I can use to supplement on certian areas/rocks/corals... yes, they would be 150w and be 6.5k, 10k, or 20k depending on application (sps/softies). The ones I have seen on the Japanese tanks look very similar to modern track lighting (on an adjustment riser - rotate etc).

Well just realize it is going to look funny if you go with a 6.5 K bulb bc its gonna look REAL yellow.

Well the ATI powermodule is pretty expensive. I would run an extra 8 lamp Tek light before I bought one of those. Of course its your money. :)
There are several Elec supply houses around town that may be able to supply you with the necessary parts to do what you want. Try E Sam Jones off of Atlanta Rd./285 or you can try Graybar or Rexel.

Me peronally would stay away from "Track Lighting" because they are not designed to be used in wet areas and the fixtures would Rust in a matter of time. You need to spend the money and buy fixtures that are made out of Aluminum or powdercoated steel and have fasteners that resist rust.

You can buy different length stems/extensions for track lighting pendant so your height issue shouldnt be a problem. But I do have to agree with Dawgdude, you do realize that 6500k is going to be a bit yellow and will need to be supplemented with actinics and maybe even some 10k. I would suggest putting the 6500k bulbs towards the back of the tank behind the supplemental lighting to mask some of the yellow..

Thanks for the info. Yes, the spotlights would be supplemented by the actinic and cool spectrum t-5 fixture (8x 54w lamps). The idea is to just spotlight the sps cluster with the 6.5k spot.

I doubt they would Import anything but Im sure other Manuf. make these as well. 150 Watt pendants are not that uncommon. Try E. Sam Jones first they stock alot of different fixtures/ballasts.

2 problems:

1) If you hang one of those T5 fixtures over a 210, the MH spot lights on the ceiling will have 4-6" on either side of the fixture to actually light the tank. Can you effectivly spot light through this small gap?

2) Those track lights use very specific blubs. Can you get correct spectrum bulbs in that type?

I noticed you were looking for light fixture reccomendations on your RC thread for a 210. I use the Sunlight Supply Maristar 72" fixture with 3 - 250W HQI overdriven with Bluewave M80 magnetic ballasts and 4 - 39W HO T5 actinics. Not quite as exotic as the other fixtures you are looking at on the other thread but they are made in the states and mine arrived from Premium Aquatics in perfect shape. It comes with the ceiling hanging equipment and looks great. I have been using mine for over 3 years without any trouble...
