View Full Version : Main Tank Frag Station
Cameron 12-20-2007, 12:49 AM I want to put a little egg crate or something similar in my main tank for some frags to let them grow out. The tricky part is I don't want it to look like I have eggcrate in my main tank growing frags. Anyone know of a system like this that is relatively cheap? Maybe some rubble to cover the crate...
I thought about this frag station as well

Those frag donuts look clever for sure.

roundman 12-20-2007, 7:41 AM That mag rack is really cool and not that expensive
Great find. It would give you some place to put frags when you bring them home until you can find the perfect place
Skriz 12-20-2007, 10:53 AM you can glue ruubble or sand on the eggcrate to help it blend in.
Cameron 12-20-2007, 10:58 AM Very nice mike. Thanks!
Cameron 12-20-2007, 11:02 AM Just ordered me an assortment. Anyone else here use these?
I will be buying a custom mag rack soon. Those things are a great idea.
Cameron 12-20-2007, 3:16 PM I love my fragmags and this is the same idea with a really nice twist.
Seems like if you could find some magnets to use those things wouldnt be to hard to make. I really like those frag things that the filter guyz have because they would be very discrete. Why did you pick the racks opposed to the filter guyz?
Cameron 12-20-2007, 5:30 PM I picked both.

I would have to have a rack as I couldn't fit the plug stones in my tank, no room.
120gallons 12-20-2007, 8:55 PM Someone from my club got one of the mag racks and wasn't impressed. Said the magnets were really weak.
Cameron 12-21-2007, 8:51 AM The frag station stones are almost required given the design of my current tank. The best lighting is near the overflows which don't allow a good placement of those racks. I figure I will remove some live rock and put them right under my halides so I can get my frags coloring up and growing quick.
As for the magnets, I was/am concerned about that as well. My plan if the magnets are weak is to use some of my monster magnets I have from other projects on the outside. They should be more than strong enough to hold a smaller magnet on the inside.
flyingarmy 12-21-2007, 8:53 AM I use the BAF frag plugs and disks. Great quality and a great price. ANother method is to take a big LR that you already have and drill 1/2 holes for the frag plugs. Wa-la....frag station!
LorenK 12-27-2007, 3:17 PM What do you drill it with...do I need a special kind of bit?

flyingarmy 12-27-2007, 3:46 PM Nope...most bits can handle mason or rock.
Cameron 12-28-2007, 10:40 AM Got both in. Will write something up soon. Very impressed with the fired frag station so far.
burdundi 12-28-2007, 10:44 AM I think I may have to order one of these myself. Look forward to your write up Cameron.

Big D 01-02-2008, 11:37 PM I've made something very similar to the mag version using a couple magnet cleaners from Wally World and a piece of eggcrate. I just cut the eggcrate to fit around the magnets and then super glued it on to them using a special black super glue for bonding plastics. The only real differneces were mine was white and about twice as big. It worked well, I took it down when I traded my 54 corner with Russ.

slayer 01-02-2008, 11:50 PM i took a week off work to recover from my exams and got so bored i ended up making the fragging stations this week cause they looked pretty cool...currently in the back of my toilet curing.. real easy to do i started off making frag disks, but as always went overboard and made to many and had too much agrocrate left, so i made islands and frag plugs aswell.. turned out ok..waiting to pull them out and check the ph..will post pics when im done.

You need to be careful flushing you'll only get 2 pints of water!
slayer 01-03-2008, 12:11 AM lol.... my wifes already asked about the water pressure to the house cause theres no pressure with the flushes...she doesnt know whats in the tank...
Cameron 01-03-2008, 9:40 AM BTW both the rack and station are excellent. The station is very cool. You could make the same thing at home, but if you are lazy like me buying one makes a lot of sense. The rack is great as well with small neodynium magnets. I probably wouldn't put it on a tank with thicker glass than mine though. Anything 5/8" or small will work just fine. You could try it on 3/4" with success I think, but I wouldn't go above that.
slayer 01-03-2008, 10:09 AM i've ordered some plastic coated neodynium magnets so i could try making those aswell, glad to know as my glass is 1/2 inch thick but with the plastic coat it might make it less stronger through the increased distance... are those magnets coated in anything to prevent rusting? or just nickel plated?
Cameron 01-03-2008, 10:12 AM The outside magnet isn't coated. The inside magnet is in plastic.
LorenK 01-03-2008, 11:10 AM Where did you order the magnets? I was thinking to get some for those little powerheads i got from fragglereef.com

Cameron 01-03-2008, 11:22 AM Those magnets aren't strong enough. Someone posted in the useful items and where to find them thread with a good place to get sealed magnets.
Cam - Do you have pix of it set-up in your tank?
Cameron 01-03-2008, 5:57 PM I'll see if the misses will break out the camera tonight.

Sounds interesting but you might wanna put some type of warning so our minor friends dont look.
Cameron 01-04-2008, 11:01 AM I could endulge that post but I won't. I will rise above it... in a totally non-sexual meaning... really.
sdminson 01-04-2008, 11:04 AM Haha
