View Full Version : New feature - Drag and Drop pictures!
Ok- I've been promising new features on the website, and have finally be able to (mostly) release one of them. It's a much better interface (in my opinion) to be able to upload pictures from your computer and have them be attached to your post. Since many of our threads are worthless without pictures, I'd like to make this as easy as possible for us.
Until all the bugs get worked out, it's not enabled unless you enable it. So, if you want to help out or give it a try, follow these instructions:
Go to your Control Panel
Click on Edit Options
http://www.atlantareefclub.org/images/draganddrop/screen1.gif
Next, edit the last option on the page to be Drag and Drop:
http://www.atlantareefclub.org/images/draganddrop/screen2.gif
Now go and post a new thread or reply. You can use this thread for a demo, if you'd like. When you first use the drag and drop interface, you may receive a message about installing an ActiveX control or something similar - it's ok and expected, so you should agree. Scroll down the page, under "Additional Options", and you'll see the new image attachment section:
http://www.atlantareefclub.org/images/draganddrop/screen3.gif
Here's the fun part. You can either click the "Select Pictures..." button to have a much easier way to select pictures OR you can drag and drop pictures from your desktop into the white window (the white window only!!!!). You can drop pictures of any size, and it'll automatically resize before uploading!!!!
http://www.atlantareefclub.org/images/draganddrop/screen4.gif
Once you select or drop the pictures in place, you may roll your mouse over them and either click the X to remove (or just hit the <delete> button), or rotate them:
http://www.atlantareefclub.org/images/draganddrop/screen5.gif
Finally, when you click the normal "Submit Reply" or "Submit New Thread" buton, you'll see a popup that shows the progress of your image upload:
http://www.atlantareefclub.org/images/draganddrop/popup.gif
Once that is complete, the post will submit as normal.
A few things that we're still working on:
- You can't easily delete images for a particular post at the moment. Not too hard- just need to write that part.
- I'll be setting up quotas for people. Non-ARC members will be limited to 2 pictures per post, and ARC members will get 8 images per post.
- Users will have a total number of images allowed - probably 50 for non-members and 1000 for ARC members.
- The preview button doesn't work right now. This is hard to do because of the order that we have to upload images and check things.
- The Edit Post functionality doesn't work with the image uploader.
I'll post here to let people know when these items are fixed. I'm only releasing early to get feedback from people.
very cool idea. This will make it much simpler to add pictures.
Glowfish 08-18-2006, 6:06 PM Thanks for the detailed instructions... I just tried it out and it worked perfectly... good job!
tsciarini 08-18-2006, 7:21 PM One of the best changes (IMO) recently is that when your picture is posted in the reply, if you click on it... the size will expand to the actual file size. Then click on it again to minimize back to a thumbnail.
Try it here!
very cool.

Hmm. You might have copied and pasted or dragged the image directly in the text area instead of the image area. Pls. try again and let me know what happens.

Preview and Edit existing posts now both work. You can also delete images from an existing post. Quotas are the only thing left.
KuLLaS 08-28-2006, 8:14 PM This work :)
wildemon 10-02-2006, 2:31 PM This thread should be a "sticky" in the new members forum. It is drifting down into the archives and is not easy to find any longer. I am still having a tough time making a picture post even with these directions. I really cannot get a 640x490 jpg to be as tiny as 97K.
glxtrix 10-02-2006, 2:39 PM that option tickles me in the right places :p

Don't worry about resizing your images... it automatically does it for you!!!
Just drag and drop and it does everything else!

washowi 10-05-2006, 7:12 PM Pictures ate not coming over when I submit...
I keep getting a message; evaluation period expired. register at www.aurigma.com
Kevin 10-06-2006, 10:14 PM That means that you are using firefox, correct? It is an active x plugin for IE and Java for firefox. You can post using IE without any problems
Yes, i am using Firefox. Will try IE.
Broreefr 10-31-2006, 9:43 AM Cant get pics to show up - can someone offer help?
please.
Kevin 10-31-2006, 10:05 AM make sure you are using IE and put them in the box below your text box.
Broreefr 10-31-2006, 10:43 AM Not familiar with the ie But I was able to post pics fine earlier in the month and all of a sudden no go.
Use the non-drag and drop feature instead. UserCP -> Options -> bottom of page.
ljuhl 10-31-2006, 11:18 AM test.
working for me.
Thanks Chris.
Broreefr 10-31-2006, 2:09 PM test
Broreefr 10-31-2006, 2:11 PM No - not working. Im not a programmer but not an idiot either (well some would argue that) but I am doing everything right.
Can someone offer any other tips?
The image uploader can be buggy sometimes - I need to spend some time tracking down why it doesn't always upload. There's a lot going on, and it's all custom code.
If you continue to have problems, your best bet will be to drop back down to the basic image upload functionality and go with that...
Broreefr 10-31-2006, 2:19 PM 10-4 - I guess I can hang on and maybe one day catch the ghost asleep in the machine and it will work again 4 me thanks 4 the input though
washowi 11-02-2006, 7:49 PM I found (thru lots of trial and error) that you have to PREVIEW it before you post it. If you do not, the pictures will not come with it. Why? I have no feaking idea why..
Thanks for the heads up Pope Todd
WarDaddy 11-05-2006, 11:06 AM Stud!
That is a great communityy Board feature, the only community board that I know that has it. Well Done!

That's because I wrote it for the ARC... :) That's also why there's still bugs in it that need to be worked out.
Thanks, though! I'll keep working on things...
gwen_o_lyn 11-05-2006, 5:20 PM we're lucky to have Chris our master 'bada bing bada boom' programma' to hook us up with cool stuff!!!

Dont toot his horn on the programming end, if he figures out how valuble he is and what a good job he's doing he may stop working 40 hours a week on the site free of charge
gwen_o_lyn 11-05-2006, 5:40 PM nah chris loves us tooo much to not program for us!!! Right chris??????????
Plus, what other reef club would hook him up with elite corals that he now really needs??? And don't forget his connections to join in on elaborate diving excursions to exotic places which all happen because of his love for the reef club ;)
He ain't going no where!! :D
He ain't going no where!! :D
That is true. He is stuck with all of us
Lol! Thanks guys! :) I hope I'll have a little more time to work on web stuff once the new "administration" is in office after Jan 1. Doing the web site on top of the normal ARC admin just takes up a lot of time...
Chris... I am sure the new "administration" will keep you busy

Leslie 01-22-2009, 9:25 AM I have this response:
"Image Uploader ActiveX control is necessary to upload your files quickly and easily. You will be able to select multiple images in user-friendly interface instead of clumsy input fields with Browse button. Installation will take up to few minutes, please be patient. To install Image Uploader, please reload page and select "Yes" button when you will see control installation dialog.ImageUploader_Progress(Status, Progress, ValueMax, Value, StatusText);return ImageUploader_BeforeUpload();
Valid file extensions: avi bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg mov mp4 mpeg mpg pdf png psd swc swf txt wma wmv zip"
When I click on "refresh" nothing different happens. How am I supposed to reload the page to get the Image Uploader?
seascape 03-18-2009, 4:45 PM tried it again here but it will niot load the active x loader.:shout: HELP
Not working for me either...
Because it's disabled. Nobody seemed to like it, so it was easier to just remove it.
Ooohhhh.... that explains it. :)
texhorns98 06-03-2009, 6:33 PM Wow, this is an oldie! :) Did anything ever get resolved on this? I would post more pictures if I didn't have to upload them to photobucket first. It's a PITA sometimes!
LorenK 06-04-2009, 3:42 PM You can still upload pictures to ARC in your post (using the advanced editor). Or you can upload them to your ARC photo gallery and link to those. Members get quite a bit of space (can't remember off the top of my head).
atreyu917 06-04-2009, 7:41 PM I REALLY miss the drag and drop option. So much easier than selecting one photo...then waiting for it to upload....then to select another photo....then wait....
I'd much rather drag them all and wait for them all to load.

+1, I've never had the drag and drop thing, but waiting for the pics to load is kinda a pain. Just sayin.
LorenK 06-06-2009, 6:44 PM If everyone sends Mojo a private message telling him how cool that feature was (best to do it a few times to make sure he gets it), he might actually fix it so it works with the new software.
So you all know, he wrote that himself and I've not seen another site with that feature.

These sound like dangerous suggestions.

I bet he can't do it; that's why it's not written into the upgrade...
atreyu917 06-08-2009, 5:20 PM It was an absolutely AWESOME feature. I really miss it. I might have to shoot him a PM hahah
Mojo,
I have followed the instructions and changed to drag and drop and saved, when I go into a new thread the only option is called manage attachements, there isnt an option for dragging images into an area..
Any ideas?
Thanks Z
atreyu917 06-08-2009, 6:39 PM it was disabled. thats what we were talking about before your comment. We want him to enable it again.

terrimorgan 09-24-2009, 9:55 AM Seeing if photo posts.
mysterybox 09-24-2009, 12:59 PM it's broke.
Actually, it's just disabled. I got tired of trying to support it, and I don't have time to revisit it...
I plan to look into this again when I have time.... For now, you'll have to use the built in version.
